Tafsir from Hube Ali for Verse 77 - 81Surah Al-Waqia
The Hidden Quran
In the commentary of Ali Bin Ibrahim, it is narrated from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Abdul Rahman Al-Qaseer, that Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) was asked about: “Noon! By the Pen [68:1],” and he replied:
“Surely, Allah created the Pen from a tree in Paradise called Al Khuld (The Eternal). Then He said to the river in Paradise: ‘Be ink!’ So the river froze, becoming whiter than snow and sweeter than honey. Then He said to the Pen: ‘Write!’ The Pen asked: ‘O Lord, what shall I write?’ He said: ‘Write all that has transpired and all that will happen until the Day of Judgment.’ So the Pen wrote on a parchment whiter than silver and clearer than ruby. Then He folded it and placed it in a corner of the Throne.”
The narration continues, describing how the Pen was sealed and made silent forever: “Then He sealed the mouth of the Pen, and it did not speak afterward and will not speak ever again. This is the hidden Book [56:78], from which all copies are derived. Are you not an Arab? How come you do not recognize the meaning of the speech? One of you says to his companion, ‘Copy that book,’ or isn’t it so, rather a copy is always from another book other than the original? And these are His words: ‘Surely, We would be replicating whatever you would have done [45:29].’”
In the book Al-Ihtijaj by Al-Tabarsy, it is recorded that when Caliph Umar asked Ali (peace be upon him) to hand over the Quran so that he might alter what is between them, Ali said:
“Alas! There is no way to that. He has come with it to establish the proof to you, ‘Lest you should be saying on the Day of Judgment, ‘We were oblivious of this’ [7:172], or say that we did not come with this, for the Quran is the one which is with us. None can touch it except the purified ones [56:79], and the successors from my sons.”
When asked by Umar about the time of its manifestation, Ali replied:
“Yes, when Al-Qaim from my sons rises, he will manifest it, and the people will follow it, and the Sunnah will flow from it.”
Abu Ja’far (peace be upon him) said:
“Al-Qaim will make a stand with new commands, a new Book, and new judgments, being harsh upon the Arabs, dealing with them only by the sword, sparing none, and not accepting any accusations regarding Allah from any accuser.”
This profound understanding of the Quran’s sacred origins is further illuminated by the verses in Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56:77–81):
“Indeed, it is a Noble Quran (77) in a Hidden Book (78). None can touch it except the purified (79). A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds (80). Then is it this statement that you are indifferent to? (81)”
The Tafsir Hube Ali elaborates on these verses, describing the Quran as a "hidden Book" safeguarded in the divine realm, accessible only to the "purified ones," signifying both physical and spiritual purity.
In summary, the Quran is revered as a timeless guide for humanity, containing layers of mystery and profound meaning. Its sacredness is emphasized through its divine creation and the exclusive access granted to the purified, awaiting its full revelation by Al-Qaim (peace be upon him).
