Returning to the Qur'an: The Foundation of Heart, Mind, and Spirit
The Essential First Step Before Dhikr and Duas
Most people today are not truly connected to the Qur'an. Even those who read it may not engage with it fully—reading in translation without reciting in Arabic or delving into its tafsir. Without this connection to the Qur'an, even our spiritual practices risk being unanchored, caught in imagination or fleeting emotions.
For those who are Feeling (F) dominant, this disconnection can result in an overwhelming swirl of emotions. For those who are Sensing (S) dominant, it can pull them deeper into the dunya, tethered to the material world. And for those who are Thinking (T) dominant, they may intellectualize endlessly, unable to connect to the heart’s truth.
The Qur'an is the beginning. Start with recitation in Arabic, even if it feels challenging. Pair it with English to understand its meaning, and immerse yourself in its tafsir to uncover its depth. The Qur'an creates the foundation—the baseline of truth that transcends imagination and anchors us in divine reality.
Only then should one move to Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah that bridges the heart and mind, and Duas, the supplications that ground and direct us. Without the Qur'an as the starting point, Dhikr can become ungrounded and imagination-driven, while Duas risk being superficial and disconnected.
For artists, creatives, or anyone prone to dwelling in the visual or the imaginative, this grounding is even more essential. Begin with the Qur'an to ensure that what you create is rooted in divine truth rather than fleeting emotions or deceptive visions.
This isn’t just advice—it’s a necessity for spiritual elevation. Without connection to the Qur'an, the dunya pulls us down. With it, we ascend beyond the limits of our lower functions, ensuring not only our own growth but a legacy of faith for the next generation.
The journey begins with the Qur'an. Have you started yours?
